The Astrodome’s Future To Be Determined On Tuesday

The future of The Astrodome will be put to vote by city commissioners on Tuesday.

Proposed plans include raising the ground level “two levels to street level” to create a 1,400 space parking lot and create an indoor park or retail space.

The Houston Chronicle got video footage of what the dome looks like inside right now and it pretty much looks the same with the exception of removed seats. There’s seats piled up in one area and turf used for high school football games stored on shelves. The dome even has leftover Continental Airline’s banners along the old seating decks.

Commissioners will vote Tuesday on whether or not the dome will get renovated or demolished. According to Chron.Com, the upkeep of the dome currently costs $168,000 per year and demolishing it could cost 30 million.

In the past, voters have rejected any plans of renovation and instead suggested demolishing. Others say demolishing the “8th Wonder of The World” is a terrible idea. Houstonians are split, but it looks like we might finally have an answer.

If a renovation is decided the proposed plan would cost roughly 105 million and take 12 months to complete. “About one-third of the money comes from the county’s general fund, another third from hotel taxes and the remaining third from parking revenues, according to county figures.”

All changes to the Astrodome must be approved by the Texas Historical Commission.

What do you think should be done with the Astrodome? Should we keep it and use it or just get rid of it?
